10 Fuel Saving Tips You Can Do Now
Pat Goss

There are lots of ways to improve fuel economy and lots of ways to waste money trying to improve fuel economy. Not the least of which are miracle fuel improvers. They don't work, don't waste your money. Now you may have a diesel engine and you may be tempted to run that diesel engine on vegetable oil. Well don't do it; it will work for awhile but it could cause internal engine damage from deposits over the long haul. And remember if you live where it gets chilly in the morning, that vegetable oil could look very much like lard on a cold morning, and the engine isn't going to run.
Something else to be concerned with, most parts of the country have new fuel, it's called E10. It's 10 percent ethanol, 90 percent gasoline. Now ethanol is a renewable resource and it cleans up tail-pipe emissions but it lowers fuel economy. And don't confuse it with E85 which is 85 percent ethanol and must only be used in cars that are flex-fuel capable.
Now some of the practical things: Tire pressure; check it regularly; set the tires to the specification inside the door of your car. Clean fuel filter, good spark plugs. And there are some sensors that can dramatically reduce fuel economy. These are: inlet air temperature sensor; oxygen sensor; mass airflow sensor and no, don't look for codes because they can be out of spec and reduce fuel economy without setting codes. Dirty anti-freeze will do it as will a bad coolant temperature sensor or a bad thermostat that makes the car run too cool or makes the computer think the car is running cooler than it should.
Air filters should be replaced when they look like this. And this sucker is

Price of gas here went up this morning to $1.04 per litre.  That's well over $4.00 per US gallon.
I think the price of a gallon of gas (in the US) will be close to $4.00 per gallon by the time of the Presidential election next november.

Glad I still own my '93 and '94 Dodge Shadow ESs. Oh wait. They aren't the 2.5 versions but the 3.0 V6 versions. So much for saving gasoline. :(

I heard gas in the U.S. could hit $4/gal before it's all over with. Right now we're paying at least $3/gal here. Yesterday I bought $10 @ $3.09/gal. Today I bought more @ $3.05/gal.

it always goes up on Presidential Election years.. I guess OPEC figures if the election is screwed up America will be doomed (maybe they are right)... the election campaigns start earlier and earlier, i guess the crap that comes with it starts earlier each year as well.

what?  misinformed about politics?  what the heck are you talking about?  that was a personal observation, and if you would pay closer attention on big election years you would see the same thing. and if you think taht i believe what i said about how OPEC must think that if the election gets screwed up there won't be a president... then you didn't read that i thought thats what OPEC must be thinking.

average price of premium in my area is around $3.30 and Chicago is even higher, I think it's rated one of the most expensive gas prices is tne country. The Mini Cooper helps alot on gas mileage but I have to use premium. My Monte gets reg oct.

CarMax Experts Provide Advice on How to Improve Your Gas Mileage

RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 7, 2007 -- With the national gas price over three dollars per gallon, CarMax, Inc. , the nation's largest retailer of used cars, has advice to help you save money on gas for your vehicle.
"Even though gas prices have become a burden, there are still ways to save money on fuel," said ASE Certified Master Technicians Juan Crespo and Todd Gartner. "Maintaining your vehicle and driving it efficiently can assist with improving your gas mileage and decrease fuel spending." Here are some "car-wise" tips from CarMax experts:
1. Drive Efficiently
-- Drive the speed limit: gas mileage decreases at higher speeds.
-- Don't drive aggressively: speeding, quick acceleration and excessive
braking all waste gas. Driving aggressively lowers gas mileage both
on the highway and when driving around town.
-- Use overdrive and cruise control: If your vehicle has a manual
overdrive, make sure it is ON; overdrive reduces engine speed, which
helps to save gas. Cruise control also saves gas by maintaining a
consistent speed.
-- Avoid idling: idling for longer than 30 seconds uses more gas than
starting up your engine.
2. Maintain your Vehicle
-- Get the manufacturer's recommended maintenance done: keeping your
car in shape improves gas mileage.
-- Make sure your tires are filled to the correct pressure: this can
increase gas mileage by three percent. Always refer to the
manufacturer's specifications.
-- Whenever possible, use synthetic oil: look for "Energy Conserving"
motor oil; it will reduce friction and increase fuel economy.
-- Check and replace dirty air filters: clogged filters can decrease
gas mileage up to 10 percent.
3. Plan Ahead
-- Combine errands: this will save time, money and gas.
-- Carpool: carpooling and ride sharing can cut weekly gas costs in
half.
-- Remove excess weight: excess weight in the cab or trunk can reduce
mileage. Every extra 100 pounds reduces fuel economy by
approximately two percent.
-- Eliminate excess wind resistance: roof racks and carrier crates on
the top of the car create drag or wind resistance. Removing these
items can increase fuel economy by about five percent.
-- Use air conditioning when traveling at highway speeds: driving with
the windows open uses more fuel due to the increased drag.
-- Fill up your car in the morning: early morning is the best time
because the gasoline is cooler and denser. Since gas pumps measure
volumes of gas and not densities, you get more fuel for your money.

We are pass "Peak Oil" which means we have used more than half of the Earth's oil reserves.  Until there is alternative that can be produced in high volume, gas prices will continue to rise a $1 a gallon each year from here out, or should I say that depends on China... because if China doubles it drivers in the next 3-years (like the think) gas could go up $3 a gallon each year thereafter.

My grandfather says, it's the begining of the `End : (
I sure hope not, but China is going to be a major consumer of the Worlds assets/resources.
The US dollar value is drop'in : ( Good 4 Canada, but really bad for the USA.
I'm not suggesting hitting the Panic Button

But, if I had my Monte right now, I would go out, & enjoy it, while I have the fuel to do so .  I don't ever want to think about paying $10 a gallon

I hope that we can find the leader's in our World that can find solutions to
the many problems that humans are causing on Planet `Earth.

Cowboy... There are NO oil deposits we don't ALREADY know about.  Every inch of the earth has been surveyed by satellite and spy planes, and we HAVE used MORE than half of the Earth's oil.  We hit "PEAK OIL" back in 2001, long before China started its HUGE Surge!

Fact is, the US Government, and in particular, the US Defense/Military is the World's largest consumer of oil, using more oil than 70% of the World's Countries.  China in the past two years is position to pass the US in oil consumption.  Who is sitting on their oil... Well that is Russia!  Can't control the world militarily... Bring the world to its knees when you are controlling their oil.  Alternative fuels are going to be HUGE in the US

Russia claimed all that oil on the north pole by putting a Russian flag on the ocean floor beneath all the ice at teh north pole... but never fear, that means any oil on the moon belongs to the US if all you need is a flag to declare property yours :)
