Hey, has anyone else seen that the 3900 has made a comeback?  The 2008 Impala LTZ is offered with a milder-than-Monte 3900 motor putting out 233 HP (down from 242 in the 2006 Monte).

That's awsome, but why did they lower the Hp output? Not only that but only 17/25 MPG with gas? I get about 22/28 MPG with my 3.9L.

Today's edition of the local newspaper has an article on the '08 Impala LT.  They make a quick mention that Chevy offers an LS, LT, LTZ, and SS.  But they mostly talk about the FlexFuel 3.5 litre.  They make no mention of any of the other engines available.

Yes, have been following that very closely.

Well first off the 3.9 never went away, so to say it's making a comeback...no.  And it is rated at less hp now in the Impala because it has displacement on demand technology.  So that's the lower hp.  The 3.9 is still available in Impala, Malibu, and the minivans from GM.

A 3.9 Malibu? That thing would fly.

2006 Monte Carlo SS
Program #2528

Chevrolet Monte Carlo is the most winning car name in NASCAR racing history, and that heritage is certainly evident in the shape of this new 2006 Monte Carlo SS. Now when Chevrolet puts the SS, or Super Sport, badge on a car or truck, it means get ready for a bit more performance than its everyday kin. But this year the Monte Carlo SS gets an extra big dose of oomph with its first V8 since 1988.
Chevrolet's Super Sport badge is a dead giveaway for extra juice under the hood. But for the 2006 Monte Carlo SS, it's a totally modern pushrod V8 that delivers that big extra thump. That big power comes from a small block 5.3-liter, the Monte's first V8 in over 15 years. Along with the Impala SS, it also marks the first small block fitment in front-wheel drive Chevrolets. As in the Impala SS, the 5.3 cranks out 303 horsepower and 323 pound-feet of torque. That's 63 horses more than last year's supercharged V6.
But attached to a 4-speed automatic, the new V8 delivers V6-like fuel economy ratings of 18 city/28 highway, thanks to GM's Active Fuel Management that shuts down four cylinders during highway cruising.
The 5.3 V8 moves a reworked chassis with a wider front track and stiffer aluminum engine cradle. Topping that platform is the familiar NASCAR-inspired 2-door profile. For 2006 the Monte gets revised styling including a new front end with larger headlights, and diamond-pattern grille. Plus a new Nextel Cup style spoiler and chrome exhaust tips in the rear.
This more robust SS rides on the firmer FE4 suspension, supported by standard 18-inch alloy wheels wearing all-season performance tires. Put those tires on the track as we did and they'll run to 60 in 6.0-seconds flat. The quarter mile romps by in 14.5-seconds at 101 miles-per-hour. The engine is really gutsy off the line, rising quickly to a flat torque curve that continues all the way to 6,000 rpm. But the FE3 suspension is still a bit soft, as the front end hops a bit.
Take to the curves, such as those of Savannah, Georgia's Roebling Road Raceway, and you'll find that the SS doesn't mean sports car. Clearly tuned more for the street than track, there is plenty of body roll and front plow. Lateral transitions are fairly crisp, however. Add in standard traction control, and the SS sticks to the track surprisingly well.
The fixed-ratio steering is a little short on feel, as is the pedal for the 4-wheel ABS disc brakes. They stop the car from 60 in a longish average distance of 138 feet. As expected, the nose dives a bit, but the chassis remains straight and stable, which also describes the ride on the road. The Monte SS feels solid and very smooth, making it an excellent highway burner.
A comfortable cabin is a big factor too, with a new ****pit-style dash featuring refined dual-zone climate controls and GM's well integrated BlackTie CD/MP3/XM Ready stereo. It's a sleek and comfortable cruiser with gobs of power, for a base price of $26,990. Looks like a sweet deal to us.

Oh...ok, I thought the 3.9 slipped away from view in 2007.  I don't remember seeing any models with the 3.9 after 2006.  I saw the minivans with the 3.6 litre engine.  I mean, I could be wrong, but if so, which 2007 models actually had the 3.9?

hmmm...I guess the '07 Malibu SS had the 3.9.

Mod Bigg `J -Jason-,
I hope that the below information helps
explain the use of the 3.9L Engine
3.9 Engine
Bore remains 99 mm (3.9 in) but stroke is increased to 84 mm (3.31 in) for a displacement of 3880 cc (237 in³).
LZ9
The new LZ9 3900 features Variable Cam Timing, a new feature on a pushrod engine, roller rocker arms and has a variable resonance intake manifold. It produces 220 hp (179 kW) and 242 ft·lbf (332 Nm) torque, with a wide torque curve. A 3-valve version may be introduced later.
Applications:
LZ8
The LZ8 3900 has the same VCT technology as the LZ9. The 2007 model year introduces the Active Fuel Management system (formerly known as Displacement on Demand), which can turn off a bank of cylinders under a light load for increased fuel economy. Output is slightly lower than the LZ9 at 233 hp (174 kW) and 240 ft·lbf (332 N·m).
This engine is used in the following vehicles:
LGD
The LGD 3900 is a flexible fuel version of the LZ9, and like its 3.5 L counterpart the LZE, it can run on E85, pure gasoline or any mixture of the two. It is currently only available on GM's "Crossover Sport Vans". Output is identical to the LZ9.

Good job Space, as usual.  Yes the 3.9 is probably going to be around for awhile since it's a brand new engine in '06.

I haven't seen any that I know of but the '07 Impala should have the 3.9 under the hood.

Now we just need to get some aftermarket performance parts to hit the shelves. Would be great if the base Camaro has the LZ9 in it like I've heard somewhere that it might.

Hi Garrett, I think the LZ9 would be a super engine in the
new Camaro (if they keep it light)
I've also heard they are considering the 3.6 L,
which would also be a Great Motor for the Camero : )
(With either V-6 Engines, & a six speed, the base
V-6 Camero should run 0-60 in the high five's, and close
to 100 MPH in the 1/4 mile, in low 14teens : )
2008 GM 3.6-Liter VVT Engine With Direct Injection

  • significant horsepower and torque increases
  • dramatic hydrocarbon reductions
  • improved fuel economy

GM Powertrain announced today it will deliver a 3.6-liter V-6 gasoline engine with direct injection and variable valve timing (VVT) technologies in the 2008 model year. A vehicle application will be announced later in the year.
Additionally, it was forecast that by the end of 2008, GM will produce as many as 200,000 vehicles globally with direct injection technology, and by 2010, GM projects one out of every six GM vehicles in North America will be equipped with a direct injection engine.
The application of direct injection technology to the 3.6-liter VVT engine – a member of GM Powertrain’s family of high-feature V-6 powerplants used on cars and trucks around the world – contributes greatly to a 15-percent increase in horsepower over the current levels that range from 240 to 267; an 8-percent increase in torque, and up to a 3-percent improvement in brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC). An approximate 25-percent reduction in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions is also achieved.
With direct injection, precisely metered fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chamber, which has a cooling effect in the chamber. Cooling the incoming air charge enables a higher compression ratio, which also improves engine efficiency. Less fuel is required to produce the equivalent horsepower of a conventional port injection combustion system.
The 3.6-liter VVT with direct injection will be our highest specific output non-turbocharged V-6 engine, as well as one of the most fuel-efficient offerings in our high-feature family,” said Tim Cyrus, chief engineer for high feature V-6 and Northstar V-8 engines. “It’s the latest example of our strategy to continue to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy without sacrificing performance.”
This is GM’s third engine with gasoline direct injection. The announcement of the 3.6L VVT V-6 with direct injection comes on the heels of the introduction of GM Powertrain’s Ecotec 2.0-liter four-cylinder Turbo engine with direct injection on the 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line and Pontiac Solstice GXP roadsters. Also, since 2004, a naturally aspirated Ecotec 2.2-liter direct injection engine is equipped on Opel models in Europe.
How direct injection works

Direct injection differs from the fuel delivery process of a conventional engine by delivering fuel directly into the engine cylinde

The Cadillac commercial paraphrased says "introducing the new generation CTS."

If the changes are in the engine, interior, & suspension while the styling stays similar....

The 06-07 Montes must be "the new generation Monte Carlo" too.

As always, wishful thinking.

Sure. Get my hopes up and all.

(yes that's my '86 LS & '06 LTZ. NO... my LTZ did not make that puddle)
