I have had my 01 for a little over a year.  latley the idle has been jumpin around and sometimes when I let off the gas the car will die.  After running it for a while it starts hard and will sometimes die right after it starts.  I have replaced the Idle motor after a suggestion from the auto parts store and the fuel filter still the same problem.

hey, welcome to the site :)

could be a cat convertor issue as well

you could try running a can of seafoam through it, but most likely its a cat convertor issue

Hi Kyle,
How many miles are on your Monte ?  Has it been serviced regularly ?  It's difficult online to guess your problem without doing test.
The cat converter can clog & cause problems like you are having,
but it also maybe sensors + more.

If your Monte Carlo hasn't had a tune up lately,
It sounds like it is time for a major tune up including: spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel injection service, clean the throttle bore, idle air passages and idle air control motor. Also replace the fuel filter and air filter.

Good Luck on resolving your prob's.

For some reason on the 6th Gen Monte Carlos some of the cat converters go bad.  There is a 100,000 mile warranty on them so you could get that replaced.  Another "just to check it out option" would be to remove the down pipe - 4 bolts - and just start it in your garage just to muffle the sound.  See if it idles fine or at least better in the garage.  If it does, then I would look to that as the problem.

You are off to the right start I would have replaced the the same, Now it's time to look at the air induction. Clean the throtle body with some TB cleaner spray inside withe the butterfly open let it sit a couple minuites and reassemle should start but may be smokey at first, If that doesn't do it check and clean you Mass air flow sensor.
