Oil Filters

I am new to this site and just wondered what brand oil filters most people feel are the best. The first oil change I did on my current car, an 05 with a supercharger, I used a Fram filter and Mobil 1 oil. But now I have been hearing that while the Mobil 1 is top of the line, the Fram filters may not be the best (just hearsay, no facts). I hope to keep this car a long time. Your comments will help me decide what to use.

there will likely be plenty of arguement, but how can ya go wrong with a factory replacemnt ACdelco?

i would go with a wix filter, in my opinion they're the best, i use those filters with royal purple oil
fram filters have dropped significantly in quality ever since walmart started selling them....
there's going to be lots of people goin on about what is best....its just my personal opinion that wix is best, and they're not expensive either...
for your car you want 51040 filter, or if you buy it from napa its just a 1040 filter napa drops the first # off all wix #'s for some reason...dunno why

I believe that the Wix filters are the best, also. Make sure you put on the "long" style, off a 4.3L. Bigger is better, in my opinion, and they fit fine.
I use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 oil only because it is the only oil on the market that I know of with a 15,000mi warranty. I go 12,000mi between changes, but 6,000mi between filter changes, along with a tire rotation. My Chevy dealer does this. Their oil prices have doubled in the last year, so I have to find an alternative. Probably back to buying 5qt jugs at Wal-mart. Last qt of oil was almost $12!

yah the longer filter works good...a 51522 (or 51036, if its the s10 one) i think is the #, i just never put those in because they hold more oil..lol

Thanks for all the comments and the welcome. The part numbers are a plus, I'll need them to get my new Wix filter. I've had this car since new but have only logged on a little over 5000 miles. I have only changed the oil and filter once but since I don't put many miles on it I will change it based on the time it is in the engine. I bought the car with the intent to drive it everyday as I thought my daily driver was shot, but as it turned out, the old car started running good and I still use it. The Monte is a comfortable, fast, and fun car to drive. I guess you all know that! Don't have any pictures to post and not sure how to post them anyway. But when I figure it out I'll do it. I'm even having trouble responding to PM's. Can't seem to open them. So you guys that sent them, please be patient, I'll write back as soon as I can.

`Mudd, take some pictures, & we will assist you in posting them
You own a very rare Special Edition, and you are lucky not to have
that many miles on her : ) I don't think I could resist driving it everywhere
in good weather. Do you keep it in the garage ?
Do you know what number yours is ?
Read the forum FAQ's, and just keep try'in on the PM's, I've learned
by trial & errors...Lots of errors.
This forum is a friendly site, and we look out for each other.
Oh, you have to have a sense of humor, and don't take some comments to
seriously.
Look forward to your future posts, and telling us more about your Monte.
Wish you Safe/Happy/Fun/Fast miles in your
Special Edition Tony Stewart Monte Carlo SS.

Space and Wiz,
Thanks for offering to help. I'll need it for sure. I'll let you know when. Space, the production sequence of the car is 998 out of 1020. To answer the other questions, yes it is a garaged vehicle.
I have the windows tinted and with the black paint it looks sharp. I have a 6 hour trip coming up so I will drive it, to get the cobb webs out of the pipes.

2000LS,
I will try the AC Delco oil filter also. I hear that they are top quality.

Avoid the Frams. The paper in them is deteriorating much quicker than they used to in years past. I just stick with the AC Delco brand.

In addition to my car I also have a Chevy diesel PU truck. I had heard that the Fram oil filters for the truck were not recommended due to poor design and materials. I had used Fram filters for the last umpteen years and never had an engine related oil problem. With that said, I guess I was very lucky. I currently am using the AC Delco on the truck but still have the Fram on the Monte. Next oil change I will definately look into the Wix or Delco filters. On the diesel people say that the air filter made for GM is the best. But on my Monte I have the K&N as I just felt that they make a good air filter and I like the idea of it being reuseable.

I used Frams on my old "beater cars" - Pontiac 6000 LE ($3000) and 2 Fiero's ($1000 each) but they weren't worth the extra upkeep of good filters in my mind. If I blew the engine in them with the high milage they had, so what? I'd buy a good used engine for $250 - $600 and be done with it.
The interiors were great in them and the GM 2.5 Iron Duke engines are a dime a dozen for good ones.

my question is why pay extra for an acdelco filter when you can get a better wix filter for cheaper?? i just dont understand buying parts from the dealership if you dont have to...they rip you off

Good point. But you could sell Delco in your store couldn't you?
I mean, if you wanted to. I see that some of the ones in my local sell them but don't display them. It's like a back room item. Ha, ha.

before i worked at a gm dealership there's a store around here called farm-n-fleet i could by ac delco filters at for a very reasonable price

delco is very anal about who sells their products...if you carry one thing you have to cary them all, we're trying to get delco ignition in the store, but wouldn't carry anything else...thats the only thing we want from them (ie. caps, rotors, wires, coils...etc...) but once a store in town carries it they wont allow another store to carry it, we'll get it...its just a matter of time...but we wouldn't switch out our filters, hubs, brakes, starters, alternators, etc etc...the only thing we want is ignition
and the only reason we want that is cuz a couple of shops in town thats all they'll put on...even though ac doesn't even make their own parts...you cant tell them that...they want the ac name....for example the plug that fits our car up here lists (retail price) for $14 ea, the NGK version is $5 or $6 , and the ac delco plug is made by ngk (says ngk right on it)

What they are doing with the prices is not right. And to think that when you get parts from the dealership, there is another mark up ontop of that! Thanks for the info, I was not aware.

The reason I would pay extra is AC Delco is what I can find. I don't recall seeing WIX products at Advance Auto or Autozone. I'll be keeping an eye out for them.

I also haven't run across that product at our Autozones or Pep Boys.
I wonder if NAPA would carry it.
