Actually.. What isn't it straight to begin with?

Why does GM put a 'U' in there?

Do they like to pretend like they are plumbing a sink and that is the trap?

Well the guys on here told me GM put it there to protect the o2 sensor.  I got mine deleted and I was really happy with the way my car felt afterwards. Here is a link to my first post and the posted pictures of the U bend too.

The U-bend is there to place the O2 sensor vertically, and above the exhaust. There was not room between the exhaust and the floorboard originally, so they made a "dipped down" section to clear up a little more room. This keeps it out of harms way from road debris.

The U-bend deletes just have a bung for the O2 sensor to sit on the side of the exhaust.

GM thought of reliability over performance, which seems to happen all too often on cars.
