Default 06 SS thinking manual tranny. opinions?

I have a 2006 Monte SS and the transmission is starting to go (GREEEEAAAAT) and i'm thinking of going manual but i need a better understanding of cost and work that will needed to be done. I mean it's more just mechanical right? the traction control, the rev limiter, all the computer stuff will needed to be dealt with right? I personally think GM screwed up by making the 2006+ SS impala/monte automatic and FWD with the big V8. Please give opinions and lots of details, i need it.

Isn't yours covered under warranty if its an 06?

Also, IMO a manual conversion is not worth it- its a good chunk of money and custom work- look at how few people have ever done it.

What transmission do you plan to use? I can't think of any gm fwd manual that is factory rated to handle this kind of torque and vehicle weight.

If his car is an 06, and he's over the 35,000 mile mark, it probably isn't covered without purchasing an extended warranty.

My question is how hard are you freakin' driving this car that the tranny is going already? Are you doing 2nd gear launches and redlining weekly?

The transmissions in our cars are notorious for early failure. Between this site, ls1tech, and naioa.com, there are more ls4 cars with junk transmissions than I can count. No big surprise with that kind of torque in a front drive application. I've been lucky, but I don't launch it hard, the only time I really punch it is after I'm rolling. This is also one of the reasons I bought an extended warranty!

I'm kinda suprised they didn't go with a 4t80e instead in the LS4 cars. Maybe it was too big of a package to fit in the W body engine bay width wise?

that is mostlikely it.

but on youtube there is a manual gxp with a getrag27 trans in it. he used a northstar v8 tho. i would imagine it could cost you up to 8000 with out the trans. you would probably ahve to custom make drive shafts, adapters, and mayby some suspension work. if yous going to do it just say screw it make it rear wheeldrive and throw in a ls1 outta a salvage corvette

custom95 is right...ours are notorius for transmission failures (we are on the naioa site often). We have an 06 SS and the transmission went around 44K. We did not get the extended warranty, but GM was nice enough to pay for half of the cost, so it costed us $1750.00 (total cost was $3500.00 on invoice). Maybe check with your dealer and they can do that for you also? The good thing is now this transmission is warrantied for 100K (which we didn't have before).

KWJW... I'm so glad we are covered longer. I'm glad my car is GM Certified so I got the extended warranty. Now, after buying the car, I'm worried mine will crap out sooner than later. But if it does, it better do it before the warranty is up.

Default Take a look at option # 3 for your car.

Trust me, stick with the front wheel drive configuration, unless you got an extra $12,000 to convert yours into a manual or a rwd streetable like my car... Check me out. Im on here, member name; "2000MonteCarlorwd".
Dont know where you live but many local trans shops can do certain things to make those transmissions a bit tougher, like any other trans...
