Hi Members,
Found the below in my Business class research.
What do you think ?  Will GM Survive ?

General Motors (GM) Lastest Rescue Plan: Sell Brands, Fire People (GM)
Jonathan Kennedy | Summer 08
GM is preparing to sell one or several of its eight major brands in its latest attempt to save itself, the WSJ says. It may also fire thousands of managers:
Discussions among top executives about the number of brands have intensified in recent weeks, and signal a potential major shift in thinking by the company especially by Chief Executive Rick Wagoner. As top executives review future cars and trucks earmarked for various brands, "nothing is off the table," several people said. All but Cadillac and Chevrolet , which GM considers core to its business, are undergoing close scrutiny, other people said.
Saturn and Saab seem the most likely sale candidates. Saturn has never made money and Saabs sales are relatively small.
 I Saab  4 Saturn (Saturn returns 2 `Space : )
The spike in oil prices has thrown GM into panic mode. Selling off assets will raise cash and reduce the likelihood that the company will be forced into bankruptcy. It wont solve the companys deeper problems, however: designing more popular cars (cars, not trucks) and reducing its massive long-term employee liabilities. In the meantime, it continues to burn $1 billion a month.WoW

It''s sad to see America''s greatest automaker coming to this.  Hopefully any actions taken now will procure GMs future, so someday they can release a new RWD Chevrolet Monte Carlo.  Until then, say byebye to Hummer!

Information I heard on the radio yesterday.

GM has enough money to operate the rest of the year and after that??????????
Their stock is at the lowest it''s been since 1920 (or abouts)

Looks like Uncle Sam will be bailing GM out before too long?

About GM...

It''s in the news today that GM and Chrysler are in talks with each other about a merger.  Source:  Reuters news service.

Chrysler is owned by an investment company, Cerberus.  Investment companies operate by buying, then selling when the time (and price) is right.
The Daimler-Chrysler "merger of equals" was, as we all know, a take over by Daimler.  Then sold to Cerberus.

It appears to me that this "merger" with GM would actually be a take over by one company.  Either a take over by GM where GM purchases Chrysler from Cerberus.  Or Cerberus purchasing GM and owning both GM and Chrysler.

Personally, I think it''s more likely that GM would buy Chrysler.  But I''ve learned not to assume.

What do you think?

Think of all the redundancies in models.  Would a combined company keep both, the Challenger and the new Camaro?  The Impala SS and the Charger R/T?
